Joshua D. Fulmer, Esq.
Candidate for the Board of Trustees of
The Pennsylvania State University
"Restore the Roar"
Mr. Fulmer said, “The decision to run was an easy one for him after seeing the way the current board handled the Sandusky scandal and the firing of head football coach Joe Paterno.” Mr. Fulmer stated, “The primary issue facing the University remains the budget cuts proposed by Governor Tom Corbett,” who holds a voting seat on the Board of Trustees as a the governor of Pennsylvania. Mr. Fulmer said “I see the rules governing the Trustees and the composition of the Board as one of the major obstacles to an open and transparent process.” Mr. Fulmer has pledged to work towards the following goals: 1) amending bylaws that prohibit Trustees from conducting independent investigations, speaking with faculty, students, or alumni about pending issues, and require Trustees to rely on information given to them by the President of the University; 2) amending the bylaw that prohibits Trustees from speaking out against any decision of the Board as this rule restricts individual Trustees from publicizing perceived mistakes taken by the Board; 3) changing the composition of the Board in order to give more control to alumni and their elected representatives, instead of leaders of industry who use their money and political influence to win themselves a seat on the board; and 4) restricting the role the Governor has as a Trustee in deciding budgetary issues regard the University. Mr. Fulmer said, “The Governor has a clear conflict of interest when he is campaigning for cutting the State’s contribution to the University’s budget and then deciding how that money will be spent, or more importantly, what programs should be cut.” Mr. Fulmer said, “I believe strongly that the ability to receive a high-quality education at a reasonable price is the right of every citizen of the Commonwealth, and I feel the Board has an obligation to fight to protect that right for current and future students.” Mr. Fulmer went on to say, “I feel that the unity felt within the Penn State community as a result of the Sandusky scandal and the pride felt by so many alumni as a result of THON raising $10,686,924.83 are the catalyst needed to effect real change in the University and to help ‘Restore the Roar,’” which has become his mantra for this campaign.
